In June 2023, Dufour Aerospace, a Swiss eVTOL company, unveiled the Aero2 drone’s final design and specifications. In March 2023, Researchers from Ruhr University Bochum and the CISPA Helmholtz Centre for Information Security identified security vulnerabilities in various commercial drone models. A tool has been released that enables the reception, decoding, and tracking of a drone’s unique ID through a software-defined radio. This tool provides an accurate location via GPS. The researchers successfully conducted a reverse-engineering process on DJI’s proprietary communication protocol. This included a protocol section known as Drone-ID, which is responsible for encoding the drone’s distinct identifier and the location details of both the drone and its operator. The study by the researchers revealed the existence of 16 vulnerabilities in four commercially available drones, some of which resulted in in-flight crashes. DJI has issued updates that address the majority of identified vulnerabilities.
